Lifestyle Medicine Programme – Information

I’m Dr Alex Telfer, an NHS GP at Little Venice Medical Centre, working with GP practices within Central London to support a study funded by the NHSE SDF Funding.

And, I will be running these sessions with support from the Central London Healthcare (CLH) Training Hub. I’ve provided some more information below.

What is the project?

I will be running a series of 6 group sessions. Each will last about an hour and will involve a number of topics including nutrition, explaining what different food groups are, what they do, the health implications and including practical tips.

We will also cover physical activity, local services for this and overcoming barriers to exercise.

Another session will focus on mental health, sleep and how these impact on lifestyle.

We will also look at smoking and alcohol.

There will also be a session for the topics YOU want to discuss. In the past these have included hormonal impacts, supplements and different types of diets including East Asian, African, vegan and more.

Most importantly it will be focused on YOU. Whilst each session will have a theme, key to it will be the personal focus and advice, giving you the option to ask questions and get tips.

I will aim to provide both an in person and online option.

This isn’t a diet or exercise programme. My aim is sustainability rather than a short term fix. I want to give you the tools to get healthier and stay healthier.

There will be follow ups, where we’ll check on your blood tests and how you’re doing and provide support with your journey to better health.

Why is this being done?

A key part of improving the health of the population is the prevention of conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease. The NHS wants to focus more on prevention of conditions, rather than treating them when our patients have already developed them.

By improving lifestyle, including diet, physical activity, and more, not only can we reduce the risk of patients developing these conditions, there are a huge number of other benefits as well.

If I’m interested, what do I do now?

We will be hosting an introductory sessions where you can ask any questions!
