Why Host Student Nurses?
Hosting student nurses is an investment in the future of general practice. These placements introduce students to the variety and impact of primary care nursing, often influencing their post-graduation career choices. As many experienced GPNs approach retirement, placements support succession planning by helping practices ‘grow their own’ nurses and build a familiar, confident workforce.
With a large proportion of the current GPN workforce nearing retirement, this initiative helps practices prepare for the future and reduce future recruitment pressures.
Duties?
Students will work alongside their named supervisor to observe and participate in clinical duties appropriate to their stage of training. Activities may include:
- Supporting chronic disease management (e.g., asthma, diabetes)
- Assisting with wound care and vaccinations
- Taking and recording observations (e.g., blood pressure, pulse)
- Contributing to health promotion and patient education
- Shadowing consultations and triage
- Completing relevant administrative tasks
